What if Robin Hood was real and running around today? He would probably be busy busting bankers who take government money to stay afloat and then get rich at public expense. But when bankers in Latvia were exposed for that kind of dirty business, the government went after the whistleblower rather than hanging the bankers by their thumbs, as they deserved.
As has happened all around the world, when the Latvian economy tanked, the government propped up the banks to keep the economy from going into meltdown. Never mind that notoriously, bankers are the one area of financial business that are least likely to behave themselves. Governments seem to just love giving these guys money and bankers just love taking it and doing nothing for it. That was certainly the case in Latvia.
The whistleblower picked a pretty cute name for himself. He posted some pretty embarrassing financial disclosures about bankers on the take under the name of Neo – which is a tribute to the freedom fighters in the Matrix movies. So it seems that the Latvian bankers agreed to take salary cuts if the government would keep them from having to close their doors and work for a living like the rest of us. And be prepared to be shocked that it seems the bankers didn’t take those salary cuts at all. Instead, they awarded themselves some pretty hefty perks and bonuses for bilking the government and the public out of mountains of money.
So along comes Neo and he busts the bankers using tax documents and other information that bankers should not be ashamed of. You would think that the government and the banks would thank Neo and they would make things right. No, they were just steamed that they got exposed and embarrassed. Instead, right now Latvian police are hot on the trail to bring Neo to justice for having the gall to expose crooks in high places.
Way to go Neo! We could use more like you all around the world making these crooks come clean about what is going on in every major economy on the planet.
